We all know that stuff happens, but when that stuff messes with our weekend plans, we take it seriously. At McLean & Dickey Insurance, we love being out on the water, just like you! That’s why we offer insurance coverage that, in the event that an accident occurs, makes sure you can still enjoy the maximum amount of time on the water.
Whether you need a tow back to the closest marina, fuel delivered to you out on the water, or an emergency repair, our policies make sure you can soak in as much of that summer sunshine as possible.
Heck, if you have a claim and your boat is stuck in the shop being repaired, we’ll even cover a boat rental to make sure you never have to miss out on a gorgeous summer weekend.
Here are a few more details about the benefits of protecting your boat with McLean & Dickey Insurance…
Have you ever seen what a family of raccoons can do to a boat? The cost of a raccoon feast on a typical boat interior is over $5,000! Wowza! Thankfully every single McLean & Dickey Insurance policy includes coverage against these pesky vermin while home and cottage policies simply don’t cover this damage.
In the event of theft, we don’t throw any fine print about locks at you or waste time blaming you because your boat wasn’t under 24-hour surveillance. We simply stand behind you and get you back on the water as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same for most home or cottage policies. With McLean & Dickey Insurance, you’ll spend less time padlock shopping and reading fine print and more time on your boat, reading your favorite book.
With our Agreed Value Coverage, if you experience a total loss of your boat, you are covered for the full value of your policy with zero depreciation until your boat is 15 years old.
We cover any wearing apparel, sports equipment, and personal items brought on board your boat. This is secondary to your homeowners policy but the benefit is there if you need any additional coverage that your homeowners policy lets you down on.
McLean & Dickey Insurance will pay the reasonable costs incurred up to $1500 if your vessel is disabled as a result of a claim. Some of these reasonable costs include important things like boat rental costs, rental car or reasonable accommodation expenses if you’re laid up, or any additional living expenses incurred while your vessel is being replaced or repaired.
If your vessel is disabled for any reason, there is coverage up to $5,000 for the cost of being towed to the nearest repair facility, having fuel delivered to you, or the cost of emergency labour performed at the site of disablement.
Our team of claims specialists are boat insurance professionals and are 100% focused on boat insurance. We take great pride in knowing we help to get our clients back on the water 75% faster than a home and cottage claim. That works out to be about 10 more days enjoyed on the water per season.
The Aviva Marine Assistance Program is automatically added to your platinum policy so you can benefit from: • Emergency boat towing referral services • Marine navigation and trip planning information services • Health and legal assistance services • Concierge boating services.
Our standard liability limit is $2,000,000. This limit is available for all watercraft types.
We offer a variety of flexible payment options. Whether you prefer paying by cheque, money order, online banking, Visa, MasterCard or want to set up a monthly or quarterly payment plan, we’re sure to have an option that works for you.

Coverage for emergency on water services is included in each of our policies. If your boat become disabled on the lake for any reason, you will have coverage up to the limit listed on the policy for any of the following:
Please note that no deductible or claim surcharge will be applicable should we need to cover you for any of the above services.
Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value refer to the settlement basis applicable to your specific policy in the event of a partial or total loss.
Agreed Value means that in the event of a total loss no depreciation will be applied to the amount listed on your policy. In the event of any partial losses (repairs) the insurance company agrees to pay to repair your watercraft with brand new parts not exceeding the limit of your insurance.
Actual Cash Value means that depreciation is applied to all claims (partial or total), so the amount you receive will be reflective of current market value of the whole watercraft or the part that was damaged.
An all-risk policy means that if a peril is not listed as an exclusion in your policy wordings then the peril will be covered. All-risk policies typically cover incidents that are sudden and accidental.
The watercraft value indicated on your policy includes the machinery, equipment and electronics used to operate and maintain the watercraft. It doesn’t include additional equipment you may have on board like downriggers, fishing tackle, trailers, etc. These additional items can be covered under separate sections of the policy.
Yes, there is no exclusion for hurricanes, tornadoes or windstorms. However, companies control their exposure to these types of claims by excluding areas that are prone to this type of weather. It is important to know the navigation limits of your policy as it will not respond to any claims that occur outside of this area. Extensions can be granted to cover the boat outside of the normal navigation area upon written request by you. Certain conditions apply.
Reviewing the policy with one of our team members is the first step to getting the best value. They can identify any optional coverage on your policy that can be removed, which may result in a lower premium. Another option is to choose the deductible amount that is right for you. In many cases, increasing a deductible can result in a lower premium.
This depends mainly on the age of your boat. Although our Gold policy does require a survey for any boat 20 years of age or older, our Platinum policy provides a little bit more flexibility. Generally speaking, on our Platinum policy, photos can be provided in lieu of a survey on any watercraft that is 20 years of age or older, under 30’ in length, AND under $30,000 in value.
If the boat does not meet these requirements, then a full out of water marine survey would be required. A list of accredited marine surveyors can be found by clicking the link below.
